Revision as of 04:26, 5 October 2023

Focus on buffs and combos. This class serves as an analog to the wizard and sorcerer from 5E, as well as, in part, the warlock. One of the decisions a player building a spellcaster will have to make at lvl1 is what the source of their magic is: Innate, Learned or Granted. Innate would be analog to a sorcerer, learned to a wizard, and granted to a warlock. However, the Faith Worshiper will also have some parallels to the warlock.

Spell Casting

As a Spellcaster, you have the ability to access the arcane arts. You can cast spells, using spell slots.

You begin at level 1 with 3 spell slots. When you gain a spell slot, you must permanently assign the spell slot to a spell category. Every time you advance a level, you earn 3 additional spell slots.

At each new level, you learn 2 new spells of your choice. Once you have learned a spell this way, you know it forever, unless an ability or effect causes or allows you to unlearn it.

You have access to the Spellcasting Special Action System.

Magical Source

At first level, you must decide the origin of your magical abilities. Your magical abilities can stem from one of three sources.

Innate

The power of magic swells within you from your very nature.

As an innate spellcaster, you can channel magical energies through your very being. Requiring nothing more than yourself to perform whatever magics you desire.

Your talents, however, are limited. You can only gain spell slots in up to 5 different spell categories, selected when your choose this source. Every 5 levels, you get the ability to gain spell slots in one additional category. (levels 5, 10, 15, 20, 25)

In spite of your deficits in terms of breadth, whenever you gain access to new spells via levelling, you gain 1 additional spells. You cannot, however, acquire new spells via study.

Learned

You have spent time studying the arcane arts, and have mastered the ability to draw on powerful forced to inflict your will upon the world around you.

Without the natural ability to channel magic, you instead must always use an arcane focus to channel the magical energy of your spells. Foci can take many forms, from staffs to wands to amulets and rings. While naturally occurring arcane foci can be found, they are rare, and most are crafted by master arcane craftsmen.

If you are using a staff or a wand, you must be wielding the arcane focus in your hand in order to use it. If you are using a ring, your hand with the ring on it must be empty, to cast any spell requiring more than 3 spell slots. Similarly, if your arcane focus is an amulet, you must be clutching it to cast, unless the spell requires 3 or fewer spell slots.

You can cast any spell for which you have access to the formula. To cast spells without access to its formula, it requires studying and memorizing the spell during downtime.

Granted

Whether through worship, or some form form of pact, magic has been gifted, or thrust upon you by a being far more powerful than yourself.

To channel this power, you must always keep on you a talisman of your deity (or patron). Without it, the connection to them is broken and you cannot perform magic.

While you can learn new spells through study, you can also, during a long rest, commune with your deity (or patron) and swap out any one spell which you currently know for any other. The total number of spells you know, however, can only be increased by levelling or studying new spells. Spells learned through study can only be cast after being studied for 3 consecutive periods of downtime.

Class Progression

Feature Progression
Level Features
Level 2 Once per short rest, when a spell is cast that targets you (not area of effect) fails, you can capture some of that magical energy and regain one spell slot.
Level 4 Focused Casting

A number of times per day, equal to your level bonus, when you cast a spell that uses at least 2 spell slots and all spell slots are from a single category, you can cast that spell with one less spell slot.

Level 9 Spellcasting Diversity

For each spell you cast, you can use one mana point from a different category, as if it were from a required category.

Level 12 Spellcasting Specialty

When you gain this feature, select one category of spell slots. Select three spells with all of their spell slots of that category, and a maximum number of spell slots equal to your level bonus. You can cast each of these spells for free, once per long rest. You can swap out one of these spells every time you gain a level.

Level 18 No features gained at this level.
Level 21 Empower Spell

When you cast a spell that has targets (not AOE), you can add 1d4 to any rolls you make to succeed in casting the spell, or subtract 1d4 from any saving throws made by the targets.

Level 23 No features gained at this level.
Level 26 Proficient Spell

When you gain this feature, select one spell with all of its spell slots in the category previously selected in Spellcasting Specialty, and a maximum number of spell slots equal 4. You can cast this spell at will, without spending any spell slots.

Level 30 At the end of a long rest, you can reassign all of your spell slot categories.
