Some classes have the ability to craft items faster and of a higher quality than most people are capable. Tinkering is built on top of normal item crafting.
Advantages of Tinkering
Those characters with Tinkering can complete crafting in half the time as someone simply familiar with the tools, and does not have disadvantage when using tools they are unfamiliar with. Instead, they have advantage when using tools they are familiar with. They can also use makeshift tools, should requisite alternatives be available. They can also use makeshift facilities. For example, they can use stones and a campfire to build a improvised forge, and a large rock as an anvil in order to use smith's tools.
All those familiar with Tinkering techniques always have proficiency in the Engineering and Science domains of knowledge. If you already have proficiency in one or both of these domains, choose an alternative domain of knowledge for each one you already possess to gain proficiency in.
More Crafting
Certain varieties of items are only able to be crafted by those with Tinkering capabilities. In particular, these tend to be items with a higher degree of internal complexity. Anyone can forge a sword, but building a miniature automaton that can go fetch objects for you, that requires a special hand. Crafting Trinkets, Technology and Machines can only be done by those with Tinkering. Additionally, producing works with finer craftsmanship, such as detailed jewellery, or embroidered clothing also requires Tinkering. Finally, at high levels, these individuals can even learn to build entire vehicles.
The table below describes the special crafting categories attainable only by those with Tinkering, and at which levels those individuals gain the ability to craft them.
| Level | Unlocked |
|---|---|
| 1 | Trinkets |
| 7 | Animated Trinkets |
| 13 | Technology |
| 19 | Machinery |
| 25 | Vehicles |
